After a year filled with unprecedented success and remarkable expansion, Dubai International (DXB) has ended 2023 with 87 million annual guests—a number that exceeds both pre-pandemic and Dubai Airports’ yearly projections. With this outstanding performance, DXB’s recovery journey has been completed successfully and ahead of schedule, further establishing its status as the top airport in the world for international passenger traffic.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, said, “DXB’s spectacular performance in 2023 is a resounding testament to the visionary leadership and determination of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve growth and excellence across sectors, surmounting all challenges along the way.

This outstanding performance highlights how Dubai has become the most sought-after travel destination in the world and how important a role it plays in international trade and commerce. These developments have been made possible by the unparalleled connectivity, aviation capacity, and logistics infrastructure that His Highness has steadily developed over the years.

“Dubai is setting new benchmarks in passenger experience with excellence levels and innovative technologies that constantly redefine airport services. Consistent with the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to consolidate Dubai’s status as one of the world’s top three cities for tourism and business over the next decade, the city continues to grow rapidly as a global aviation hub and the world’s preferred gateway for international travelers. As we celebrate these accomplishments, we remain committed to further enhancing Dubai’s leading position on the global stage.”

His Highness stated that to position Dubai at the forefront of the expansion of aviation worldwide, Dubai Airports, under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, has implemented strategic initiatives and made essential investments in infrastructure, technology, and customer service.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said, “I am incredibly proud of everyone at Dubai International, for their dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence, which has propelled us to break many of our own records. 2023 was an exceptional year and is a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation, efficiency, and delivering exemplary guest experience. This translated to DXB achieving its highest internal engagement scores – a reflection of our commitment to fostering a collaborative culture, where every contribution is valued and every employee is empowered to their full potential. I want to express my gratitude to our dedicated team, the heartbeat of our organisation, and to our partners whose, collaborative work was instrumental in achieving these milestones.

“Looking ahead, we’re renewing our commitment to collectively enhance the airport experience for our all our guests by launching a significant project to expand and refurbish facilities at DXB, to fortify our infrastructure for future growth. DXB remains firmly positioned as a global leader, setting the gold standard for exceptional guest experiences and international aviation excellence.”

Traffic figures

DXB experienced a sharp rise in visitors in 2023, with 86,994,365 visitors overall—a remarkable 31.7% year-over-year increase. The airport recorded 45.4 million visitors in the second half of the year, which was a strong growth period that contributed to the numbers being just under 1% higher than those of 2019 (86.4 million).

December had 7.8 million visitors, making it the busiest month of the fourth quarter. In all, 22.4 million people visited the airport in Q4 of this year, an increase of 13.8% from the same period the previous year. With 23 million visitors, Q3 continued to be the most trafficked quarter since 2019, while August saw the most traffic (7.9 million guests) of any month.

According to the most recent data for 2023, 102 international carriers are currently connecting DXB to 262 destinations in 104 countries.

Operational excellence and guest experience

In 2023, DXB handled an amazing 77.5 million bags, which was the most bags the airport had ever processed in a single calendar year. With only 2.4 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, DXB maintained its unparalleled success rate of 99.8% despite a 24.6% year-over-year increase in the volume of baggage handled.

At departure passport control, over 95% of guests waited less than seven minutes, and 97.5% of guests spent an average of less than four minutes waiting at the security check.

The hub’s dedication to consistently improving business performance, guest satisfaction, and airport service quality is demonstrated by DXB’s score of 4.5, the highest the airport has ever received, in ACI World’s internationally renowned Airport Service Quality (ASQ) program.

With 11.9 million visitors, India ranked first among destination nations. Saudi Arabia came in second with 6.7 million visitors, and the United Kingdom came in third with 5.9 million visitors. Notable country markets are Germany (2.5 million), Russia (2.5 million), the US (3.6 million), and Pakistan (4.2 million).

Flight movements

The double-digit growth in visitors throughout the year was mirrored in the hub’s flight movements, which reached 416,405 in 2023—the highest number of movements ever recorded at DXB and a 21.3% year-over-year increase.

Outlook

According to preliminary estimates, DXB is expected to host 88.8 million visitors in 2024, which would put the hub very close to its previous all-time high record of 89.1 million visitors set in 2018.
